The Samsung Galaxy S23 could finally get a long-awaited camera upgrade

New report claims base models of early 2023 flagship will feature new selfie camera

Samsung’s flagship Galaxy phones are its chance to show off its latest and greatest technology, but not all components get the same attention, and that’s especially true for certain cameras. The Galaxy S23 family is still months away, but a recent report suggested that Samsung is planning to use an upgraded version of the ISOCELL HP1 200MP sensor in the Galaxy S23 Ultra. Now we learn that Samsung may also be planning to upgrade the front cameras of the standard Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23+.

The Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23+’s selfie camera could get a resolution of 12MP, according to GalaxyClub (via SamMobile). This would represent an upgrade to the 10MP sensor featured on the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+.

This would notably be the first front camera upgrade for both models since 2019’s Galaxy S10. It’s unclear whether this improved 12MP front camera will feature optical image stabilization (OIS) or if similar upgrades are in the cards for the Galaxy S23 Ultra.

With no additional details available at this time, we’ll file this in the “maybe” section for now. Still, a front-facing camera upgrade for the base Galaxy S23 models seems logical, considering they’ve been untouched for a few years now. While there is speculation that Samsung is using an under-display front camera like on the Galaxy Z Fold 3, this is just wishful thinking.

Rumors of a front camera upgrade have been around since before the Galaxy S21 arrived. However, Samsung stuck with the 10MP front camera with the Galaxy S21/S21+ and their successors earlier this year. But could 2023 be the year that will change this practice? We certainly hope so.

Samsung has usually reserved major camera upgrades for its Ultra models. All Ultra variants ranging from the Galaxy S20 Ultra in 2020 to the newest Galaxy S22 Ultra feature a gigantic 40MP selfie camera. If the base models get an upgrade, we also expect the Galaxy S23 Ultra to sport an improved front camera. Before getting to the Galaxy S23, Samsung is expected to unveil the Galaxy Z Fold4, possibly in early August.
