As expected, the new 300 Series ran effortlessly in the conditions we’ve always said a LandCruiser should be made for. There were really no surprises in the 300’s capability, with the usual off-road modifications the only factors that would have made it better. More clearance, better shocks, more focused tires. Still, we made it through the Simpson Desert without even a flat tire. The fact that ordinary Australians can get to these remote areas with a standard 4×4 is remarkable.
As a first time Simspon cross country rider, I was blown away by the experience of such a remote part of our country. I’ve been around the Simpson area before but never driven through it, although I’ve done a lot of 4WD in Australia. I think west to east is also the way to go, although the reverse of our trip would also be rewarding, ending with a dip in hot water at Dalhousie Springs after a few days in the desert.
