Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra review

The Note that isn’t a Note, but could very well end up being the last Note – Samsung’s Galaxy S22 Ultra has some big shoes to fill. Tempting to please both productivity-focused stylus enthusiasts and photography enthusiasts alike, the latest Ultra will either be the ultimate phone, period, or a failure for either group in one way or another. ‘another one. We are here to find out which one is it.

S Pen fans will have little to complain about at first glance. The S22 Ultra has the same stylus as the Note20 Ultra and like a real Note it has a silo to keep the thing inside the phone – none of that carries it separately until you inevitably lose it with the S21 Ultra. The significant latency improvements also look promising, not that the old one was bad.

The photographer crowd shouldn’t be disappointed either. You get the same quad setup as the S21 Ultra (in principle, at least) and includes a few telephoto lenses reaching up to 10x zoom, plus ultra wide autofocus (which Samsung insists keep exclusive to the Ultra). This is of course in addition to the 108 MP non-binning large sensor main camera.

The lengthy spec sheet (summarized below) includes what looks to be the brightest display on a smartphone to date, the latest chipsets from Qualcomm or Samsung (depending on locale, as usual), an option of 1TB storage (next to a base tier of 128GB not befitting UItra’s stature), and increased battery capacity and rated charging power (we’ll get to that) .

Unboxing the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra

The S22 Ultra comes in a black cardboard box that’s now even smaller than before (the environment appreciates that) with a stylized number “22” on the lid and a shiny “S” in a color to match the actual phone paint inside.

High-end Galaxy unboxings have become simple tasks in the past couple of years since bundled chargers became a thing of the past – the flip side of the slim box. Inside you’ll find the bare minimum – a USB-C cable and SIM eject tool, as well as the phone itself. But what a phone it is.
