Hibs star Ryan Porteous pictured in group who stole memorial wreath

Hibs star Ryan Porteous was part of a group that stole a woman’s tribute to her mother who died of dementia.

The 22-year-old defender was filmed as a man walked into a garden to take the homemade wreath.

The incident happened in the early hours of Sunday morning after Porteous and his friends were drinking at an underage club in Dalkeith, Midlothian.

The devastated owner managed to track down the memorial after taking to social media and posting a security camera image of Porteous and her pals.

A local contacted the woman and identified the Easter Road idol. He was also told the wreath was thrown in front of a nearby Aldi. She found it damaged and her mother’s brooch, which was placed in the center, was missing.

Ryan Porteous was part of the group that stole the crown

It is understood the culprit asked to call the woman to apologize after contacting Porteous on Facebook.

A source said: “It happened around 1.30am on Sunday morning.

“The woman makes a wreath every year in memory of her mother who died of Alzheimer’s disease.

“It’s heartbreaking that her mother’s brooch is missing. The guy who took it contacted her and apologized and said he would deliver flowers.

Porteous had previously played in the Hibs’ 2-0 win over Ross County at Easter Road.

He then headed to the Dalkeith Miners Club, known locally as the Woodburn Club, with friends. The centre-back was identified as one of a group of men spotted outside the woman’s home after she posted an image on Facebook.

She wrote: “Who is this person? He thought it was OK to come to my garden… early this morning and steal my crown. I want it back or I’ll report you.

She later edited the post to say it had been fired.

She wrote: “I got it back, damaged, and my mum’s brooch is missing in the center.

“It was an Alzheimer’s crown and this brooch cannot be replaced.

“The man who took it phoned and apologized, so I appreciate that.”

A Hibernian spokesperson said: “We are aware of the images that have surfaced relating to Ryan Porteous.

“We are looking into the matter and will remind him of his responsibilities as a high profile figure at Hibernian FC.”
