Dashcam wanted in fatal Stamford crash

HARTFORD, Conn. (WFSB) – Stamford police are looking for dash camera footage after a fatal crash that closed northbound I-95 for five hours Monday afternoon.

At around 2:31 a.m. Monday, dispatchers received reports of a motor vehicle collision involving a motorcycle on northbound I-95 north of exit 8 in Stamford.

An initial investigation into the crash found that a 2023 Isuzu van truck operated by Michael Smith of Woodbridge, Va., was traveling north on I-95 in the center of three lanes of traffic. A motorcycle driven by Jose Coreas-Ortiz hit the back of Smith’s box truck. After the initial crash, a Freightliner tractor-trailer operated by Abraham Fofana rammed Coreas-Ortiz while separated from his motorcycle.

Coreas-Ortiz was declared deceased at the scene and his next of kin have been notified. No other injuries were reported.

The CSP CARS (Crash Reconstruction) Unit, CT DOT and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) responded to the scene to assist. The facts and circumstances surrounding this incident are still under investigation and this is all information available at this time.
