WEST MEMPHIS, Tenn. – An Encounter with a Group of Young Women now has former West Memphis Police Officer David Kohl facing criminal charges, but let’s get back to how we got to this point and the story Kohl told towards what is seen in the video cam dashboard.
On October 26, Kohl wrote in his report that he received a call about a group of girls fighting in Horton Park.
In the video, you can see he approached the group saying he got a call about a fight. Several people in the group responded to him and said that they were not fighting.
“There is no fight. You don’t see anybody fighting, ”said one of them.
But Kohl was not letting go.
“You are about to go to jail. The next curse out of your mouth, you’ll go to jail, ”Kohl told one.
A 19-year-old woman then challenges, saying, “The next swear word? The next bad word? I grew up.
Kohl then said there were children in the area. The 19-year-old swore and that’s when Kohl chases her.
“No, don’t touch me,” she said.
Another officer arrives to break everything.
According to the report filed by Kohl, he told a much different story than the one shown in the video.
He claimed to have told the young woman that he was looking to “come here”, but “she refused”.
Kohl also said he made several attempts to defuse the young woman’s refusal to be arrested and she turned to him and started hitting him in the face and head. He then said other members of the group also started attacking him.
Shortly after the incident, the public prosecutor’s office was informed.
Kohl was placed on non-execution and was fired and charged a few days later.
