Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea was spotted hitting the tunnel furiously after losing 2-0 to rivals Manchester City.

The 30-year-old made his way to the locker room after the full-time whistle blast where he was caught attempting to break through Old Trafford’s famous red tunnel on camera.

De Gea, though frustrated, was comfortably Man United’s best player on the pitch as he held City at bay with several exceptional saves while his defenders were battered by City.

The Spaniard came to the rescue on several occasions in the first half as he lost a goal, notably saving a close-range effort from Gabriel Jesus who seemed certain to end up in the net.

De Gea walked to the tunnel full time

But he finally let the pressure get on him and conceded a poor goal on the stroke of half-time after a terrible defense from Luke Shaw.

Shaw failed to cope with a whipped cross from Joao Cancelo, allowing Bernardo Silva to pull through.

De Gea seemed bamboozled by the winger’s ability to reach the seemingly overcooked center and just let the ball hit him in the arm and enter.

He was clearly frustrated with both his own mistake and a lackluster Man United, who could only retain 32% possession that day.

Do you think De Gea is still a world class goalkeeper? Let us know in the comments section.

The Red Devils’ defensive woes appeared to show no sign of ending as they continued their dismal run of form, with just one clean sheet in their last 13 games in all competitions.

Even more furious will be Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who is currently feeling the pressure after a 5-0 home loss to Liverpool last month which led to calls for his sacking.

And the Norwegian’s task won’t be any easier over the next month with tough matches against Villarreal, Chelsea and a fit Arsenal.

As SUVs continue to dominate sales, it’s no surprise that many automakers are looking to increase their presence and lineup in this category. Volkswagen is an automaker that has had a delicate history with its SUVs, but which persists and tries to grow.

A few years ago, VW introduced their Atlas 3-row SUV, and now they are starting to expand the Atlas family with the Atlas Cross Sport mid-size two-row SUV – which is now in its second year and is coming up against a host of popular vehicles including the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Chevy Blazer and Ford Edge, and literally dozens of other SUV options.

I recently drove a 2021 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport – which mainly picks up the 2020 model but adds a new infotainment system and some extra safety features – and I’m back with a full report on how it fits. in the SUV landscape.

for your information

Vehicle: 2021 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport
Price tested: $ 48,115 (from $ 33,000)
Best feature: Quality and versatile interior design, powerful new infotainment system, safety features
Evaluation: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Who will want this vehicle? : Two-row SUV buyers looking for a new attractive, user-friendly and tech-savvy alternative

LOOKING

The exterior of the Atlas Cross Sport I tested featured an attractive Aurora Red Metallic paint job. The chrome design of the front grille and bumper is quite eye-catching and stands out in the segment.

The vehicle is fitted with 18, 20 or 21 inch alloy wheels, depending on the trim level. It also features LED headlamps, an adaptive front lighting system, heated and power folding side mirrors, variable intermittent rain-sensing front wipers, a tilting panoramic sunroof and electric sliding and silver roof rails. All Atlas Cross Sport models have a ground clearance of 8 inches.

With a lower roofline than the three-row Atlas and a sloped rear hatch, the dimensions of the Atlas Cross Sport are 195.5 inches long, 78.4 inches wide and 68.3 inches high. . It is 5.2 inches shorter in length and 2.2 inches shorter than the Atlas.

Inside the Atlas Cross Sport you will find plenty of space for cargo and for five passengers. Headroom measures 39.4 inches and 37.8 inches in rows 1 and 2; with legroom at 41.6 and 40.4 inches. The rear seat offers a 60/40 split, with the possibility of reclining.

Atlas Cross Sport can boast a maximum cargo volume of 77.8 cubic feet behind the first row seats with the rear seats folded down and 40.3 cubic feet with the rear seats up, and there’s plenty of features to keep everyone happy (including USB and 12- Volt inputs, cup and bottle holders and storage space for small items).

The overall quality of materials used in the Atlas Cross Sport was also quite solid, but not quite on par with some of its competitors (This makes sense, as traditionally VW has been functional, not flashy, with its interior designs ). The leather seats were comfortable and nothing inside the vehicle felt cheap or shoddy. And the controls are exactly where they need to be for easy operator use.

Interior features include: dual-zone automatic control with 2nd row air vent, heated leatherette-wrapped steering wheel, heated and ventilated driver and front passenger seats, heated rear seats, manual roll-up sun visors and ambient lighting.

HOW IS THE ROAD?

The Atlas Cross Sport 2021 is offered with a choice of two engines. My test vehicle featured the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and its 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. You can also upgrade to a 3.6-liter V6 which brings the figures to 276 horsepower and 266 pound-feet.

The Atlas Cross Sport comes standard with front-wheel drive or optional all-wheel drive (VW’s 4Motion AWD system) and four-wheel independent suspension.

In my experience, the base engine was disappointing in terms of overall performance and a bit slow to pick up speed. The time from zero to 60 is approximately 8 seconds. Eco, Normal, Sport and Custom drive settings are offered, but overall it’s a less sporty vehicle than some of the competition, and the engine noise is a bit louder as well.

Besides his power struggles, the rest of the driving experience in the Atlas Cross Sport is pretty strong. It behaves well for its size, reacts immediately to driver commands and also offers solid braking performance. The towing capacity is 5,000 pounds and the AWD system is effective in eliminating loss of traction.

Beyond the traditional Onroad Riding Mode settings, AWD models also offer the ability to select settings such as Snow and Offroad, which tweak the systems to best suit the conditions with just the tweak of a button.

TECHNOLOGY, SECURITY

Volkswagen has included its all-new infotainment system on most of the Atlas Cross Sport trim levels. Called the MIB3 system, it has an 8-inch display, multi-phone pairing, enhanced voice recognition, and multiple USB ports.

The infotainment system’s touch controls are generally straightforward, but take some time to learn. Voice commands are very simple and effective (eg “Tune to Yacht Rock Radio”). Navigation can be searched by address or by points of interest, and the system understands the controls fairly well.

The system includes navigation, AM / FM / HD radio and a three-month trial of SiriusXM satellite radio. There is also a premium quality Fender audio system including a subwoofer.

Other technological features of the vehicle include: remote start, keyless access to all doors and tailgate, push button start, anti-theft alarm system with engine immobilizer, Bluetooth for playing music and calls and charging wireless for compatible devices.

Volkswagen also offers a competitive amount of safety features for the segment.

The rear view camera is standard, as are the automatic post-collision braking system and the blind spot monitor. The Atlas Cross Sport has six airbags, as well as an anti-lock braking system and electronic stability control. The Intelligent Collision Response System also shuts off the fuel pump, unlocks the doors, and turns on the hazard warning lights if the car is involved in a collision.

Some higher trim levels of the Atlas Cross Sport come with IQ.DRIVE – which uses front and rear radars, a front camera, and multiple sensors to collect data and activate features like forward collision warning and autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian monitoring (front assistance); Blind spot monitor (lateral assistance); Rear traffic alert; Adaptive cruise control; Lane Keeping System (Lane Assist); Travel assistance; and emergency assistance.

Travel Assist is a new feature on some trim levels, which enables practical, partially automated driving in the Atlas Cross Sport, activated by a button on the steering wheel.

Other safety features of the Atlas Cross Sport include dynamic signage display; High beam control, aerial view camera and tire pressure monitoring system.

MPG

The official fuel consumption figures on the Atlas Cross Sport with the four-cylinder engine and all-wheel drive are 20 city / 24 highway / 22 combined, and my experience has confirmed that these figures are correct. These are decent numbers, but not spectacular in a segment with a wide lineup of two-row SUVs.

The other fuel economy figures are 21/24/22 for the front-wheel-drive four-cylinder engine; 18/23/20 for the V6 with front wheel drive; and 17/23/19 for the V6 with AWD. The Atlas Cross Sport has a 19.5 gallon fuel tank.

THE PRICE

The Atlas Cross Sport I tested was in the high end and at just over $ 48,000. The base version starts at around $ 33,000, so there is a wide price range depending on what features you include. These prices are generally in line with what you’ll pay for the many two-row SUV alternatives available, although they are a bit higher than some of the competition.

Eight trim levels are offered and warranties on the Atlas Cross Sport include a new vehicle limited warranty for 4 years or 50,000 miles (whichever comes first). In addition, VW’s worry-free maintenance program provides scheduled maintenance services for 2 years or 20,000 miles.

LOWER LINE

While not the most powerful option in the mid-size two-row SUV class, VW’s Atlas Cross Sport is a powerful new entry, well-designed for cargo and comfort, and full of technological and security innovations. For people who love the Volkswagen aesthetic, but don’t need the three-row Atlas, this is a welcome alternative.

Colin Kaepernick: Five things from the Colin series in black and white https://ng2100.com/colin-kaepernick-five-things-from-the-colin-series-in-black-and-white/ Wed, 03 Nov 2021 10:00:13 +0000 https://ng2100.com/colin-kaepernick-five-things-from-the-colin-series-in-black-and-white/ The real Colin Kaepernick and Jaden Michael – who plays his young him in Colin in black and white Black History Month is over, but its message about the importance of black stories continues throughout the year – and is particularly relevant in Colin Kaepernick’s new Netflix series, Colin in Black and White. The real Colin Kaepernick and Jaden Michael – who plays his young him in Colin in black and white

Black History Month is over, but its message about the importance of black stories continues throughout the year – and is particularly relevant in Colin Kaepernick’s new Netflix series, Colin in Black and White.

The American football star gained worldwide attention in 2016 as the first sportsman to kneel down to protest police brutality and racial injustice in the United States, and has become a global civil rights activist.

But instead of focusing on those acts, the series traces his early teenage years growing up in California, dreaming of playing in the Superbowl.

The format shifts from autobiography, featuring Kaepernick in vision and storytelling, to dramatization of his experiences.

Here are five things we took from the six-part series …

“What you start is not necessarily what you become”

Jaden Michael stars as Colin Kaepernick in new Netflix series Colin in black and white
Michael, in the role of Kaepernick, explores the choices and the difficulties faced by the young sporting hope

Kaepernick almost did not succeed as an American football player. The key moment in this story was his rejection of several major teen baseball teams.

The series portrayed young Kaepernick, played by Jaden Michael, as a volunteer, deciding to wait for a football scholarship, although he was ridiculed for the decision by his coaches and peers at school.

His belief paid off. He received a football scholarship offer from the University of Nevada at Reno in 2006. After graduating, he was selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the second round of the 2011 NFL Draft.

In this episode, the real Kaepernick says, “For me, I played baseball because I was good at it. My passion, my love, was to be a quarterback.”

He thought football was his destiny – but life took him on a different path …

“Growing up with white parents, I assumed their privilege was mine. I was in a rude awakening ‘

Kaepernick is shown exploring his black identity, including experimenting with different hairstyles

Kaepernick has always been close to his parents, Rick and Teresa, and thanks them for instilling good values in him. But the series exposes some of the challenges he faced growing up with white parents in a predominantly white city.

They adopted him as a baby in Wisconsin after struggling to conceive a third child and then moved with their family to Turlock, California.

In various scenes, his parents are unable to comprehend their son’s need to explore his black identity and often fail to recognize that he is being treated any differently.

After young Kaepernick secretly gets cornrows, his father tells him that he “wastes his energy on hairstyles.” Later, his mother tells him that “you look like a thug” when his coach asks him to change his hairstyle in order to stay on the team.

After that, he didn’t have any braids for another 14 years. In vision, the real Kaepernick looks into the camera barrel. “I couldn’t rebel because I didn’t know how,” he says. “But now… I know how and I will.”

Kaepernick first knelt on September 1, 2016, before the 49ers’ final preseason game, against the San Diego Chargers. A few months later, her parents released a statement. He said, “We want people to know that we are very proud of our son and admire his strength and courage in kneeling for the rights of others.”

“Until the people in charge change their minds, you will be an anomaly”

Colin in Black and White raises questions about what it means to be black in a society that promotes whiteness. It tackles topics that black children and other youth of color face around stereotypes, micro-aggression, alienation and more.

While on a road trip, there are several scenes in which Kaepernick, played by Michael, is treated differently from his white friends and counterparts.

In one scene, which takes place during his high school years, he leads his parents to a baseball tournament when he is arrested by police.

The policeman asks his parents: “Are you okay?” After saying they are, the officer intimidates their son before picking up his gun as he finds his license. Kaepernick is shown shaking. As the policeman walks away, his mother says, “You dodged a bullet.

Towards the end of the episode, the real Kaepernick says, “I guess what I’ve learned this summer is… they’re not always going to give you a fair call. But you can’t let them stop you. to play the game. “

‘You will learn to find beauty in a world that tells you there is none’

Kaepernick's homecoming experience from school is depicted in the series
Kaepernick’s homecoming experience from school is depicted in the series

Kaepernick’s athletic development came at a time when he was also discovering girls.

In one of the last episodes, he wants to take one of his school friends, a black girl named Crystal, to Homecoming – the American school tradition where alumni are welcomed as part of ‘a celebration.

However, his white and black friends each push him towards one of the popular white girls, having described Crystal as “cute” but “so damn black”.

He doesn’t listen to his friends and pursues Crystal regardless, discovering love for the first time.

The real Kaepernick explores society’s views on beauty by explaining a psychological experiment called the doll test, external link where children were shown two dolls, one black and one white, and asked who was good and who was bad, pretty or ugly and who the children wanted to be most like.

Later, Kaepernick reflects on the evolution of ideas about beauty. He notes that in 2019, for the first time, five of the world’s biggest beauty pageant titles were all held by black women.

‘Trust your power’

The series ends with an inspiring letter to her young self, recited by the real Kaepernick. He explores his ups and downs but how he “wouldn’t trade those moments for nothing”.

He said, “Dear Colin, trust your power. Even when you don’t see it, believe it. Because you’re going to need it. From your first few days, rejection will follow you and it will be there every step of the way. your journey. It will come from people who love you… and from people who think you are out of place. It will even come from a girl or two. But rejection is not a failure – it is a failure. standard…”

Kaepernick fulfilled his dream of becoming an NFL quarterback, leading the San Francisco 49ers to the Superbowl in 2013.

He later states in the letter that while he was focusing on his role as a quarterback, something else was happening. Something extraordinary …

Is this a clue on a series two?

Colin in Black and White is now streaming on Netflix.

There is a lot to consider when looking for the best GoPro, especially with the addition of the new GoPro HERO10.

Maybe you’ve played the new Riders Republic and been inspired to grab your best snowboard and film yourself doing huge off-piste jumps.

If so, our list, based on features, price, and reviews, should be the place to start your search for the ultimate action camera.

Whether you’re looking for something to capture all angles, like this GoPro MAX, or looking for something to capture 5K footage, like this GoPro HERO9, then we’ve got you covered here.

Best GoPro

Best All-Around GoPro – GoPro HERO10

Video: 5.3K / 60FPS, 4K / 120FPS, 2.7K / 240p | stills: 23MP | Filter: 2.27 “rear LCD, 1.4” front color LCD | Waterproof: 10m | Voice command: Yes | Image stabilization: HyperSmooth 4.0 | GPS: Yes

The latest installment in the HERO line, the GoPro HERO10, may look like its predecessor, but it has some of the more advanced camera tech.

GoPro boasts that this camera comes with a new GP2 processor, something that hasn’t changed since the HERO6 in 2017, which should make it the fastest GoPro to help you capture all the action at your best. Mountain bike.

The image quality has also been significantly improved, as the frame rate has doubled from the previous model and you can now record in 5.3K at an impressive speed of 60 frames per second.

Overall, it’s probably not surprising that we feel the HERO10’s latest GoPro is one of the best all-rounders around.

Best 360-degree GoPro – GoPro MAX

Video: Source 6K, assembly 5.6K | stills: 18MP, Hero = 5.5MP, PowerPano = 6.2MP | Filter: Touch screen | Waterproof: 5m | Voice command: Yes | Image stabilization: HyperSmooth | GPS: Yes

The GoPro MAX was released around the same time as the HERO8 and was designed as a direct replacement for the GoPro Fusion.

This camera combines the ability to capture 360 degree footage in 5.6K with a number of handy HERO line features like HyperSmooth image stabilization and TimeWarp motion time-lapse video.

Plus, it comes with a useful touchscreen where you can probably easily switch between the front and rear views as you ride your best skateboard.

Ultimately, if you’re looking to capture your entire surroundings in exceptional quality, this GoPro MAX might be the camera for you.

Best GoPro 5K – GoPro HERO9

Video: 5K / 30 fps, 4K / 60 fps, 2.7K / 120 fps | stills: 20MP | Filter: 2.27 “rear LCD, 1.4” front color LCD | Waterproof: 10m | Voice command: Yes | Image stabilization: HyperSmooth 3.0 | GPS: Yes

While not the latest model, the GoPro HERO9 should still deliver fantastic picture quality to help you capture your extreme sports, but for a little less than the latest HERO10.

Above all, the HERO9 was the first in the line to add the always useful front screen, particularly useful during vlogging for example.

It is also waterproof up to 10m without a case, making it more compact and easier to carry for sports like surfing.

When it comes to action cameras, the GoPro HERO9 should still be a competitive kit although it is not the last model in the HERO line.

Best Budget GoPro – GoPro HERO8

Video: 4K / 60 fps, 2.7K / 4K, 1080p / 240 fps | stills: 12MP | Filter: Touch screen | Waterproof: 10m | Voice command: Yes | Image stabilization: HyperSmooth 2.0 | GPS: Yes

The GoPro HERO8 is now a few outdated models and as a result is now a great budget option to consider.

It comes with GoPro’s HyperSmooth 2.0 technology along with additional High and Boost settings to smooth even the most shaky images.

Additionally, the HERO8 is capable of capturing at 60 frames per second in 4K, so it should be more than suitable for uploading your footage to YouTube or showcasing it on your best sports TV for example.

Ultimately, if you’re looking for a slightly cheaper GoPro, this HERO8 might be your answer.

Best GoPro for Beginners – GoPro HERO7

Video: 4K / 60fps, 1080p / 240fps | stills: 12MP | Filter: Touch screen | Waterproof: 10m | Voice command: Yes | Image stabilization: HyperSmooth | GPS: Yes

Despite being a few years old, the GoPro HERO7 should still be a solid action camera to capture anything you ask of it.

In terms of software, the HERO7 is very similar to the HERO8, for example, it can still capture images in 4K at 60fps or 1080p at 240fps.

In addition, you can take 12 MP photos and use the voice control technology which should make it easier to use when riding your best road bike, for example.

All in all, if you’re looking for an entry-level product at a relatively inexpensive price, this GoPro HERO7 could be a great place to start.

The Atlanta Braves are one win away from their first World Series title since 1995 after beating the Houston Astros 3-2 and taking a 3-1 lead in the seven-game series.

Jose Altuve’s 23rd Homer in the playoffs in the fourth inning gave Houston a 2-0 lead.

But Atlanta fired back in the sixth when Austin Riley led Eddie Rosario.

And the hosts’ comeback was complete when Dansby Swanson and Jorge Soler hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the seventh, which proved to be decisive.

Having been on track to at least ensure the series returns to Houston for Game 6, the Astros are now facing elimination down the road – on Halloween.

Without a recognized starting fourth pitcher, Atlanta opted for a “lifters game”external link – where a battery of backup pitchers runs the business – rookie Dylan Lee thus became the first pitcher to make his first major league start in the World Series.

But Lee was pulled after registering just one at Truist Park, having loaded the bases for Carlos Correa to lead to Altuve for the opening round.

The Astros had six-time All-Star Zack Greinke, recently back from injury, to start, and he gave them four scoreless innings and a hit of his own – but failing 11 baserunners ultimately cost Houston dearly.

Closer Will Smith, who did not concede a earned run in the 2021 playoffs, became the Braves’ sixth pitcher used and pulled the visiting team in the ninth to put Atlanta on the brink of another title.

Game 5, the last game in Atlanta, is Sunday night.

The closest Formula 1 title race in years is also the first one I’ve followed since Eddie Irvine’s naughty days.

My interest in the tooth-and-nail battle between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton is due to a recent Netflix series full-blast binge-watch. Formula 1: Drive to survive, which goes behind the scenes of F1’s precarious, Darwinian glamor.

Oddly enough, Drive To Survive doesn’t really focus on Hamilton and co at the top of the F1 standings. It’s more by accident than by design. Mercedes and Ferrari did not participate in the first round and offered limited access thereafter. Instead, the show proves the old maxim about the best stories found in the Losers’ locker room.

Teams like Haas, Renault, McLaren and Williams fight for the respectability of the “midfielder” and bicker like little children over minor infractions of engine regulations.

Pilots at this level are constantly in danger of losing their seat for the next season, a fate they seem to fear more than the frequent and terrifying accidents.

I was hooked from the start, thanks to a scene where a Haas team mechanic fails to properly bolt a new set of wheels. The camera zooms in on the horrified guy’s face. We’ve all been there. Sure enough, the wheels fly off and team director Gunther Steiner, one of the stars of the show, rages like an Alpine Basil Fawlty.

Team leaders – think football managers, but with even more profanity – are in a constant state of bewilderment as to why an engine just blew up or a driver decided to plow a car worth it. millions in a nearby wall. All they can really do is hire and fire drivers, or preferably poach one from a rival. They mock and mock like minor royal courtiers.

There’s Red Bull’s charming but deadly Christian Horner, the pit lane Littlefinger who changes drivers more often than tires; Cyril Abiteboul, the former boss of Renault constantly on the alert; and the alpha dog of the paddock, Toto Wolff of Mercedes, as skilled as Don Draper and as Austrian as Arnold Schwarzenegger, except perhaps more skillful and Austrian.

But it is the conductors who seem to be toys for the gods the most. While they look more like exchange students with a backpack these days than the swashbuckling playboys of yesteryear, self-confidence remains a prerequisite. They are literally the 20 best motorists in the world. Still, there can only be three people on the podium, so most spend their lives dealing with disasters of all kinds, usually beyond their control. They usually manage their emotions by going jet-skiing in Monte-Carlo.

There is something inherently humiliating about your brake pads failing at 300 km / h. Despite all their arrogance and arrogance, they must submit to their fate. This also happens in other sports; but imagine the visual impact of Cristiano Ronaldo crashing into the Old Trafford hoarding with smoke and fire coming out of his ass.

Drive To Survive has been credited with bringing a new audience to the sport, especially in America. The Yankees were previously indifferent to its Eurotrashy charms, preferring their own rootin ‘, tootin’ varieties. But F1 TV audiences have doubled in the United States since Drive To Survive first aired in 2019.

You can tell that Drive To Survive is designed for Americans, as there are a few F1 journalists employed throughout to give VERY SIMPLE EXPLANATIONS of what’s going on. In addition, there is very little automotive jargon. Everything’s fine with me – the last car that I figured out the specs was owned by Fred Flintstone.

Before my DTS frenzy, Formula 1 had been idling in my mind for about two decades. I was a big fan. When I was eight, I prayed at mass one day that God would let Keke Rosberg win the Australian Grand Prix. He duly did so, and I have yet to find better evidence of a benevolent interventionist deity.

It was the glory days. Prost vs Senna, Jordan story, arrival of Michael Schumacher, Irvine winking at the pit girls all recorded by the BBC commentary team of Murray Walker and James Hunt, a mix high octane and sleazy – F1 encapsulated.

I’m not sure what happened then. Not enough overruns? Did Schumacher’s dominance take away the thrill of the chase? Of course, there are plenty of reasons not to like Formula 1. Sports wash, environmental concerns, primacy of dirty money – F1 has it all. But he most likely suffered from the greed of football on our attentions. Super Sunday took pole position. Like a latecomer overtaken by Lewis Hamilton, F1 has kind of been ousted, as far as I’m concerned.

The success of Drive To Survive shows how fickle attentions can be rediscovered. Of course, this is more “content” than journalism. There are freedoms taken with which the stories are followed, the drama is heightened by skillful editing, and occasional scenes are staged. Verstappen refused to cooperate this season, claiming the show was “wrong”. But most in the F1 circus recognize its transformative impact.

It’s not that there is something new about providing access and allowing skilled storytellers to do their jobs. This is how great sports writers and broadcasters worked in the 20th century, building legends by bringing audiences close and personal, without the headquarters defenses of modern public relations and media education.

Drive To Survive works because it’s less about machines and more about people. Even though his championship chances have diminished, Daniel Ricciardo is one of the most popular characters in the series, thanks to his sympathetic and silly personality. Pierre Gasly’s redemption after being dumped by Red Bull makes you beat the air. And when Romain Grosjean bows out after walking with a blazing fire in Bahrain, his tearful wife by his side, we want to give him a big hug.

You understand that when the pit lane engineer tells a driver, like a very calm midwife, to “push, push” he is asking her to risk her life. A show that makes you worry about arrogant rich young men who drive fast cars for a living: that’s good storytelling.

The only downside is that you are afraid to watch the championship in progress, lest it spoil your enjoyment of the next DTS season.

Spoiler alerts. Very Netflix.

“A numbers game”: the hidden work of football statisticians | Soccer https://ng2100.com/a-numbers-game-the-hidden-work-of-football-statisticians-soccer/ Tue, 26 Oct 2021 15:00:00 +0000 https://ng2100.com/a-numbers-game-the-hidden-work-of-football-statisticians-soccer/ YesYou don’t know his face or his name, but you have experienced his work many times while watching football on TV. YesYou don’t know his face or his name, but you have experienced his work many times while watching football on TV. As a freelance broadcast journalist and associate producer, Dave works for, among others, BT Sport and Premier League Productions, the company responsible for broadcasting the Premier League to the world. He is part of an army of statisticians who provide a vast array of facts and figures to those working in front of or behind the camera. When Peter Drury or Martin Tyler seemingly pull a choice stat out of thin air to add it, there’s a good chance he did it from his stat pack.

Dave describes it as the perfect job for a football geek, and Drury confirms that these statisticians are “of a certain kind.” Having started his career in Spain, as part of his sports journalism degree, Dave worked for Real Madrid TV, before joining Sunset & Vine, the production company behind BT Sport, when it launched its football coverage in 2013. He has worked with them, as well as other broadcasters, since. It mainly focuses on assembling the stat pack for each match.

“The Stats Pack isn’t just for commentators,” says Dave. “It is also used by presenters and studio guests, experts and even producers.” It is the bible of a whole series of people involved in the show. “Some people use it religiously, while others use it as a point of reference, as and when they need something.”

The Stats Pack is a huge file with a huge amount of data that goes into granular detail about every aspect of the game. It includes information about each team, including their history and recent form, every encounter between the two teams, each player from both teams, manager records, etc. A typical Premier League single match pack may contain 25,000 words and commentators may only use 1% of the material.

Dave likes anonymity but received the occasional mention. “James Richardson gave me a name on the BT Champions League Goals Show a few weeks ago which was good, but very rare.” By a strange coincidence, he was also mentioned by Julien Laurens last week when he helped the French journalist regain the previous goal of the less than prolific Andreas Christensen ahead of his Champions League goal against Malmö on Tuesday.

Viewers might have known it was the Dane’s first goal for Chelsea after waiting 137 games, but very few would have remembered his previous club goal for Borussia Mönchengladbach against Schalke in the Europa League in 2017. Strangely, Christensen had been in a bit of trouble. purple stain at the time, having scored four days earlier in the Bundesliga against Hamburg adding to his goal a few weeks before that against Fiorentina also in the Europa League. Very few people would have this information at hand, but Dave does.

There is a lot of interaction between the commentators, producers and statisticians, starting with the preparation, during the game itself and in the post-game analysis. These hidden nuggets make all the difference. So when a scarcity such as a Christensen lens occurs, the fact must be quick and precise. “You can do all the prep in the world,” Drury says. “But when something pops up that you never could have predicted, I hit what’s called ‘the lazy button’ which allows me to ask for things to be checked in the air. they become an essential resource.

“In an ideal world, I like to do all of my own preparation,” Drury says. “But there’s never a match where I don’t refer to the stats pack, because I’m going to do one last check on it and sometimes I’m like ‘now that’s a good line’ and then I do – even further research. It’s a matter of extrapolation, so hypothetically to say that Norwich has their worst top-flight run since 1953, it allows me to verify what happened all those years ago, if time permits.

Opta didn’t start collecting detailed stats until 2006-07, so Drury is relying on other sources to delve deeper into the story. “I am a subscriber to the England National Football Archives which contains all training from the very beginning of league football and is my trusted source for historical information,” he said. The ENFA contains detailed information on, at last count, 234,182 games and 46,151 players, dating back to the first season of the Football League of 1888-89.

“I often use such information for those poignant moments after players die,” Drury says. “Very recently when we lost Jimmy Greaves everyone knew about Greaves’ incredible scoring record, but I wanted to know a bit more about his goals especially in the Spurs-Chelsea games. Likewise with Roger Hunt, who I discovered almost 60 years ago, scored his first leading goal for Liverpool against Manchester City, which they were playing that day when they observed a minute of silence in his honour.

The co-commentators are slightly different. “While some want to know every detail because they want to avoid being torn to shreds on social media, others are not particularly interested.” Dave said. “One of the co-commentators is the most beautiful guy in the world but he would be hard pressed to name the left-back of a major European team against an English club. It’s really every man for himself.

As Drury points out, there is a balance between the two roles. “It’s not their job to know the details. As former players, they’re there to explain how something happened, insight that only those who have played the game at the highest level can provide. While as commentators we describe who, where, what and when.

Like Dave, Chris Moore has worked for Sunset & Vine since the launch of BT Sport eight years ago. From his perspective as a producer, Moore sees the Stats Pack as his comfort blanket. “It helps me understand something that I might have missed and it serves as a point of reference throughout the game.” Moore will always read the first few pages because they provide a summary that gives him a lot of material to fill in at the most opportune moment. “The magic of the front pages is that they contain all of the main stories that we can research during the show,” Moore said. “They established the game digitally and in the last few years football has become a numbers game.”

Moore points out that the real challenge comes once the game is on. “This is when we really need to know about it,” he says. Statisticians and producers are always bracing for what might happen in a game. When Patson Daka scored his second goal for Leicester in their Europa League draw at Spartak Moscow last week, Dave and Moore started looking for the fastest hat tricks in Europa League history.

Dave found out that Daka’s hat-trick was the first scored by an away team at Spartak since July 2008, when Vágner Love scored for CSKA Moscow, so he texted Adam Summerton, who mentioned it. in the comments. Much to Moore’s delight, the game generated another startling statistic. When Daka scored his fourth goal of the evening, he became Leicester’s co-top scorer in European football in his third appearance for the club in the Europa League.

Speaking of players scoring four goals on an away pitch, another example of the statistician-commentator interaction was when Dave was working alongside Drury in January 2017. “Myself and Peter did Liverpool against Swansea and Fernando Llorente scored a quick brace. As few players do a hat-trick against Liverpool at Anfield, Peter asked me the last time this happened. Luckily I’m a Liverpool fan so I could tell him straight away it was Andrey Arshavin in 2009. ”In fact, the Russian scored all four goals in a 4-4 draw and remains the only player to having scored four goals at Anfield for an away team in the Premier League. As Michael Caine would say: “And not many people know that. “

Do you like volleyball? It doesn’t even matter! You will love Haikyu !! no matter what.

Netflix

Prestige TV, from now on, died for me.

In a universe where humanity faces the double existential threat of climate change and a slew of increasingly terrifying COVID variants, I’m not sure I have the time, energy, or impetus to consume complex, award-winning TV.

No thanks. I prefer to watch disposable and easily consumable shows like Haikyu !!

Haikyu !!, currently available to watch on Netflix, is an anime. A sports anime to be precise. Just like Slam Dunk, the show he is most clearly inspired by, Haikyu !! focuses on a motley group of high school students: teenagers obsessed with volleyball.

Wait … volleyball? That niche sport that no one really watches or plays?

Yes. Volleyball. This niche sport that no one really watches or plays.

Indifferent to volleyball? This is understandable. It is not the most fascinating or the most popular sport. As someone forced to play volleyball during an incredibly painful semester in high school, I hated volleyball, but I love Haikyu !!.

And in Haikyu !!, volleyball barely counts. While this is a show that spends much of its running time in volleyball practice arcs and intense volleyball matches – in Haikyu !!, volleyball is almost unimportant.

More than anything, Haikyu !! is a show about people who to play volleyball.

After Hinata Shoyou, a shorter than average high school student trying to succeed in a sport where size is everything, Haikyu !! – much like most sports anime – is primarily a show about overcoming adversity. Despite a vertical challenge, Hinata is blessed with incredible jumping power and athleticism and leads her high school team, the Karasuno Crows, to new heights. Much of Haikyu’s power !! just watched Hinata dismantle the giants he must compete against.

If you’ve watched an anime, you’ll know exactly what to expect: long, never-ending flashbacks, slow replays, drama, contests that go all the way and plenty, unending crowd reaction photos as protagonist Hinata shoots incredible volleyball spikes against all odds.

I love it. I can’t get enough. Let this serotonin flow right through my veins.

Inspired by a vast canon of high school sports anime, there is a heartwarming familiarity with Haikyu !!. The aforementioned Slam Dunk provides the model, but Haikyu !! borrows elements from almost any sports anime you could name: Prince of Tennis, Ping Pong, Hajime No Ippo. Just like these shows, Haikyu !! takes the grind of high school life and elevates it into something dramatic and spectacular.

Points are won and lost. Rival teams and enemies are introduced. Overwhelming losses are overcome and glorious victories are assured. Everything is done with the studied efficiency of the creators who have clearly absorbed a legacy of this type of storytelling and refined it to a razor sharp shine. Haikyu !! is the end product of decades of sports anime and, therefore, is unbelievably easy to consume. Every second is a condensed and hedonistic joy.

But what uplifts Haikyu !! beyond the ordinary sports anime, there are the characters themselves. Each member of Hinata Shoyo’s team, the Karasuno Crows, has their own difficulties and doubts and volleyball is just the common thread through which these issues are overcome. The ‘ace’ of the team, Asahi, is shy and struggles with feelings of inadequacy. Kageyama, the team’s passer, is determined, but riddled with anxiety after a previous team abandoned him mid-game.

Even the members of the opposing teams are incredibly well drawn. Tōru Oikawa, the outwardly friendly but manipulative captain of main rivals Aoba Johsai is perhaps the most compelling character study. He’s meant to be the main villain of the series, but is ultimately made likable. Oikawa, who overcomes his talent deficit by raising the level of the team around him, has his own demons to take down. You can’t help but support everyone in Haikyu !! and that makes the stakes in every game soar.

On a few occasions, I found myself on my feet, hitting the air for joy during games.

The show’s first two seasons are available to stream on Netflix, but there are four seasons in total. If you’re impatient, you can watch seasons three and four for free on Crunchyroll.

I took one more step. After watching all the episodes of the show, I needed more. I have now read all the chapters of the manga source material that the anime is based on. Friends, you have a lot of good things to look forward to. The rabbit hole is deep.

But, for now, every journey begins with a first step. The first step of your Haikyu !! the journey begins with episode 1 on Netflix. You will not regret it.

Meghan Barone was nervous about the East Atlantic Cross Country Championships. In her sophomore year at Centenary University, Barone knew she had been training, but was still concerned about Saturday’s race.

Barone received advice from Nick Mayhugh, a three-time Tokyo Paralympic Games gold medalist. In a Zoom meeting with Centennial student-athletes on Monday night, he encouraged them to visualize success.

It’s something he does before every race, saying “I’m the best. I’m the best. I’m the best.” on the starting line.

“It resonates something in your subconscious and you will perform better,” said Mayhugh, 25, who set world records in his 100 and 200-meter standings in Tokyo, won gold in the mixed relay of the United States and was second in the 400 meters.
