Great White Shark Population Rising Off California Coast | Live Science

the great White shark The population off California’s northern coast is healthy and growing, according to a new study.

A survey of the great whites (Carcharodon carcharia) off the north coast found a stable adult population and a slight increase in the number of subadult sharks, totaling 300 individuals. The researchers used a seal decoy to lure predators to the top of their boats so they could photograph and count sharks.

The results are excellent for the region.

“Robust populations of top predators are essential to the health of our coastal marine ecosystem,” study co-author Taylor Chapple, marine ecologist at Oregon State University, said in a press release. “So our findings are not only good news for white sharks, but also for the rich waters just off our shores here.”

Great white sharks are found in coastal waters around the world. They are threatened by overfishing, according to the World Wildlife Fund, and their world population is declining.

On the Pacific coast, by contrast, sharks seem to be doing well. Chapple and his team initially published an estimate of the shark population off northern and central California in 2011. The new research updates the previous estimate with longer-term observations. Sharks found in the region don’t stay in one place: they spend half the year in the northeast Pacific, between Baja, Mexico, and Hawaii, then spend the other half of the year closer from the shore, going as far north as Washington. and as far south as Mexico. The largest populations are found near Guadalupe Island off Mexico and in the California Current off northern California. This current extends from Monterey Bay in the south to Bodega Bay north of San Francisco.

From 2011 to 2018, Chapple and his colleagues carried out boat observations at three sites near the southeastern island of Farallon, the island of Año Nuevo, and Tomales Point off the coast of California. They collected more than 1,500 photographs as well as underwater video footage of great white sharks, using the dorsal fins to identify individual sharks and get a more accurate count.

“Every white shark has a unique dorsal fin. It’s like a fingerprint or a barcode,” Chapple said.

This individual identification also allowed researchers to track male and female sharks over a long period of time. Although the overall population numbers seemed strong, the researchers were slightly concerned that the adult population of white women is only around 60 years old.

“This highlights the need for continued monitoring of white sharks, as there are relatively few active breeding females providing the population with additional sharks,” said study co-author Paul Kanive, a doctoral student in ecology. at Montana State University, in the release.

The reproduction of the great white shark is largely a mystery, but scientists believe the gestation period is around 12 months, and females typically give birth to between two and 10 cubs at a time.

The possible population growth could be the result of a natural fluctuation, or it could indicate that shark protections in the region are working, the researchers wrote in the May issue of the journal. Biological conservation. In particular, restrictions on gillnets – fishing nets that are left in the water to entangle fish – could improve the survival rate of young sharks. More needs to be done to protect white sharks along their migratory journey, Chapple said.

“We can provide as much protection as possible when they are in coastal waters, but these sharks are highly migratory animals,” he said. “It will take international cooperation, agreement and enforcement to protect them.”

Do Short People Live Longer? What we know

You can assume that being tall means, to some extent, being healthy. In addition to genetics and heredity, adult height is largely determined by nutritional intake during infancy and childhood. The better the nutrition, the more likely you are to be healthy and taller.

But several studies have questioned this hypothesis. Being tall can have its advantages. But, according to some studies, long life may not be one of them.

While much more evidence is needed, research indicates a possible link between height and specific diseases, as well as potential for longevity.

Keep in mind, however, that short and tall are relative terms, and more research and evidence is needed to confirm these results. Lifestyle habits also play an important role in the potential for longevity.

We’ll highlight the research on this topic and break it down for you.

There are several studies indicating a correlation between height and risk of mortality.

Death rate among Italian soldiers

A longitudinal study of men who had served in the Italian army found that those shorter than 161.1 cm (about 5’3 in) lived longer than those taller than 161.1 cm. This study looked at the death rates of men born between 1866 and 1915 in the same Italian village.

The researchers found that by age 70, taller men must live about 2 years less than those who are shorter.

During the years the study participants were born, the average height of men in the village was around 5’2 ″. By current standards, it’s relatively short.

It’s also important to note that the researchers did not correlate variables, such as weight and BMI (body mass index), for this study.

Longevity of former basketball players

A 2017 study About the size and lifespan of former professional basketball players found that larger body size resulted in reduced longevity. This study analyzed the size and lifespan of 3,901 living and deceased basketball players who played between 1946 and 2010.

The players had an average height of 197.78 cm. (approximately 6’5 ″ high). In this study, the tallest players in the top 5% died younger than the shortest players in the bottom 5%. People born between 1941 and 1950 were an exception to these findings.

Researchers quickly noticed that variables such as variations in genotype, socioeconomic factors, medical care, weight, education, nutrition, exercise, and smoking were all factors that also play a role. in determining longevity.

The FOX03 gene

The FOX03 genotype and its relationship to size and longevity were analyzed in an observational study study of 8,003 American men of Japanese descent.

The FOX03 gene is systematically linked to longevity in human and animal studies. It is also related to the size of the body and can be one of the reasons why smaller people can have a longer lifespan.

In this study, men who were 5’2 or less were more likely to have a protective form of the FOX03 gene and lived the longest. Those over 5’4 ″ had a shorter lifespan.

Smaller men have also been shown to have less cancer incidence and lower fasting insulin levels. FOX03 is a key regulatory gene of the insulin / IGF-1 signaling pathway.

It is not fully understood why, or even if, smaller people are destined to live longer. Much more research is needed.

Currently, there are several theories:

  • Calorie restriction (eat less). It is possible that this is a factor that promotes a longer life for smaller people. Tall people have bigger bones and larger internal organs than short people. This means that they need more daily calorie intake to function optimally.
  • Shorter bodies have fewer cells. Tall people can have billions more cells than short people. This allows for greater exposure and greater impact on cells from free radicals and carcinogens.
  • More cells means more cell replications. As people age, replacement cells may no longer be available to repair tissue and organ damage in tall people.

Health complications that can be correlated with height include cancer and other conditions. Here’s what the science says.

Cancer, death from all causes

A 2016 study of American men and women have found a link between height and cancer risk, as well as all-cause mortality. The researchers analyzed data from the death certificates of 14,440 men and 16,390 women aged 25 and over.

According to the researchers, an additional one inch increase in height generated a 2.2% risk of death from all causes for men, and a 2.5% higher risk of death from all causes for men. women.

A further increase in height resulted in a 7.1% higher risk of cancer death for men and a 5.7% higher risk of cancer death for women.

The researchers monitored the level of education and birthdays. They concluded that their results indicated a positive increase in accessibility to excellent medical care, for conditions other than cancer, among participants.

Cancer risk in postmenopausal women

Cancer risk and height were analyzed in a 2013 study out of 144,701 postmenopausal women. Being tall was positively associated with all types of cancer, including thyroid, breast, colon and ovarian cancers.

Size was found to have a modest, but statistically significant, impact on cancer acquisition.

The researchers analyzed data from women who had no history of cancer. They also tried to adjust the weight and the body mass index.

There are many variables that may have had an impact on the study results, in addition to size. For example, smoking and alcohol consumption rates have been shown to increase with height.

Education level, ethnicity, income level, as well as the use of oral contraceptives and hormone therapy, may all have had an impact. Cancer screening rates played no role in the study’s results.

Venous thromboembolism (VTE)

Recurrences of VTE were found to be more common in tall women than in short women. several studies. In this case, the simple fact of having longer legs and longer veins where a thrombus could occur may be the reason.

Age, obesity and long-term hospitalizations are other potential risk factors for this disease.

There are many factors that impact longevity, and size can be one of them. However, this does not mean that tall people are meant to live short lives, or that short people are meant to live long lives.

Lifestyle choices can also have a huge impact on disease acquisition and longevity. To be in better health and potentially increase your life expectancy, you can:

  • stop smoking or vaping
  • reduce alcohol consumption
  • exercise
  • eat healthy foods full of nutrients and antioxidants
  • reduce the consumption of sugar, fast food and processed foods
  • lose weight if you are overweight
  • reduce stress
  • live in a less polluted place

Many studies have found a correlation between height and longevity. It has been found that short people are resistant to certain diseases such as cancer and live longer.

But these studies, while convincing, are far from conclusive. The best thing you can do if you care about longevity is to make lifestyle choices that have a positive effect on your life expectancy, regardless of your height.

What you need to know about the agreement to legalize for adult use

ALBANY – New York became the 15th state to legalize recreational marijuana after state lawmakers approved it on March 30 and Governor Andrew Cuomo enacted it the next day.

But the first legal sales of marijuana in New York will stick around for at least a year as the state puts in place a regulatory system to oversee the cannabis industry.

New York’s new marijuana law allows the cultivation, sale, and possession of cannabis products, including marijuana, with residents of the state also being given the green light to grow plants in their homes – eventually.

The Legislature approved the bill largely on the basis of parties, with most Democrats voting for and most Republicans voting against.

Here is some of what the Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act it will be fine:

How old do you have to be to legally possess marijuana?

The bill applies to anyone over the age of 21. It is still illegal to own, buy or use marijuana if you are under the age of 21.

It is now legal for people over 21 in New York City to own, display, purchase, obtain, or transport up to three ounces of cannabis and up to 24 grams of concentrated cannabis, according to the bill.

The bill also specifies that adults may use, smoke, ingest or consume cannabis or concentrated cannabis products, including marijuana. And they can give it to anyone over 21.

For now, New York is in a gray area: although you can legally possess marijuana, the sale of the drug is not yet permitted. This will not happen until the state issues various licenses for the cultivation and distribution of marijuana and gives the green light for the start of sales, which cannot happen under the law. law until April 1, 2022 at the earliest.

Eventually, you will be able to have up to five pounds of marijuana in your home, although this will wait until home grow regulations are in place – which will take up to six months for medical marijuana patients, and possibly. be 2 1/2 years or older for other users.

Where can you buy marijuana?

New York’s plan will allow the state to issue a variety of different cannabis licenses, with different ones available to producers, processors, distributors and retail sites.

There will be two different types of sites authorized to sell marijuana to consumers:

  • Retail dispensaries, which will essentially be storefronts where people can buy cannabis products and take them home
  • Adult-only consumption sites, which will be salon-like places where people can buy marijuana and use it on site.

How much will marijuana sales be taxed?

Sales of marijuana will be taxed at a rate of 14%, according to the bill.

Of this amount, 9% will go to the state, while 3% will go to the town or village where the sale is made and 1% will go to the county.

According to the bill, a tax will also be imposed depending on the THC content when selling from retail dispensers: 0.5 cents per milligram for flowers, 0.8 cents per milligram for concentrated cannabis and 3 cents. per milligram for edibles.

The state’s share of tax revenue from marijuana – which is expected to rise to $ 350 million per year when fully implemented – will be distributed in three ways. 40% will go to grants for communities disproportionately affected by previous drug laws; 40% will go to schools and education; and 20% will go to drug treatment and education programs, according to the bill.

Who is going to oversee New York’s marijuana system?

The law will create a new Cannabis Management Office to implement regulations and oversee the entire industry, including the recreational marijuana, medical marijuana and hemp sides.

The office will be overseen by a council appointed by the governor and legislative heads. The office will also have an executive director appointed by the governor.

What type of possession / sale of marijuana would still be illegal?

Penalties will begin to apply once someone owns or displays more than three ounces of cannabis flower or 24 grams of concentrated cannabis.

They ranged from a simple low-level offense to a Class D felony for possession of more than 10 pounds of flowers or four pounds of concentrate.

The illegal sale penalties would remain for anyone who sells unlicensed marijuana or cannabis products. They range from a violation on the low end to a Class C felony for over 100 pounds.

It will also remain illegal to drive under the influence of marijuana, although there remains considerable debate on how best to enforce it.

The law will require the state’s health department to investigate the use of saliva-based marijuana tests and recommend whether they can be used in the future.

I have been convicted of a crime related to marijuana. Will my file be deleted?

If you have been convicted of a previously illegal cannabis-related act that the bill legalizes, your case will automatically be struck off.

The law requires the State Judicial Administration Office to go through its files and determine which file contains a crime that needs to be cleared. The office will have up to two years to complete the tax, according to the bill.

When will legal marijuana sales begin?

The law doesn’t seem to give a date on which legal sales of marijuana can begin, but it will certainly be several months before that happens.

Legal sales will not begin until the state issues a license for cultivation, processing and sale.

It will take some time: the governor and legislative leaders will have to appoint people to the Cannabis Management Office and the board of directors, then they will have to approve the regulations and go through the licensing process.

The tax structure of the law will not come into effect until April 1, 2022, which appears to be the first legal sale that could begin.

Will I be able to grow marijuana at home?

Yes, but not for a while.

The law allows every New Yorker over the age of 21 to grow up to three mature and three immature cannabis plants at a time, with a maximum of 12 plants per household.

If you are a certified patient of the state’s medical marijuana program, you can start growing no later than six months after the law comes into force, provided the Office of Cannabis Management has put growth rules in place by then, which will be legally required. make.

For recreational users, the wait will be longer: growth can only start up to 18 months after the first legal sales in dispensaries or consumption sites, which pushes it back until 2023 or 2024. One more time times, it will depend on when the state gets the regulations approved. .

New York to allow walk-in visits to state vaccination sites

All New York state-run mass coronavirus vaccination sites will allow anyone 16 years of age or older to walk in and get their first dose, starting Thursday, announced Tuesday Governor Andrew M. Cuomo.

Walk-in vaccines will be available at state-run sites in New York, such as the Javits Center in Manhattan and Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, as well as on Long Island and cities upstate. like Albany and Syracuse, the governor said.

The second doses will always be given by appointment, which will be scheduled after the administration of the first dose.

“Just show up and roll up your sleeve, and mass vaccination sites have the capacity to handle it,” Cuomo said at a press conference Tuesday.

Other types of vaccine providers in the state, such as pharmacies and sites run by cities and counties, will also have the option to begin allowing walk-in visits, a move encouraged by the governor.

New York had already started to allow certain vaccinations without prior appointment. Mr. Cuomo announced last week that people 60 and over could enter for vaccination at 16 state-run sites. And Mayor Bill de Blasio of New York announced last week that city-run vaccination sites would allow any eligible person come in for a shot.

Allowing appointments simplifies a process that plagued many New Yorkers earlier in the pandemic, when getting an appointment for a vaccine often took hours of online research and a little luck too. The new policy could also attract people who are still hesitant to get vaccinated, Cuomo said.

“This is our way of saying, if you were intimidated by the process of trying to make an appointment, go,” said the governor.

He said it was possible to allow more visits because fewer vaccinations were being given statewide now – around 115,000 doses per day – than a few weeks ago, when the state peaked at around 175,000 doses per day.

“Demand is decreasing, fewer people are asking for appointments,” Cuomo said.

State data shows that just under 45 percent of New York residents, just over 8.9 million people, had received at least one dose of the vaccine on Tuesday morning.

Mr. Cuomo also announced at the press conference that New York would adopt the new CDC guidelines that fully immunized people can safely enjoy most outdoor activities without a mask.

Reports of new cases and hospitalizations have declined in the state, according to a New York Times Database, but the risk of infection remains very high in New York, where some troublesome variants of the virus appear to be on the rise.

Where can I get the COVID vaccine in Massachusetts? The entire adult population of Mass. will become eligible for COVID vaccination on Monday – NBC Boston

After months of waiting, anyone over the age of sixteen will be able to make an appointment to be vaccinated against the coronavirus in Massachusetts starting Monday.

Bay State is one of the last states to make snapshots available to the general adult population.

People like Andrew Sagerian of Boston are ready to finally get their COVID-19 vaccine.

“I’m just going to be able to get back to normal,” Sagerian said. “Most of my family have already been vaccinated, which is good to know that they are already vaccinated. But now I can go out and do things with them.

Sagerian and an additional 1.7 million Massachusetts residents will become eligible to receive the vaccine in the Commonwealth on Monday.

“I want to get the shot,” said Mackenzie Ryan, a Tyngsboro resident.

“We’re almost going to be a normal summer; we’re getting there, ”said Bostonian Allison Leacu.

The expanded eligibility will make a big difference to many people, including those who have already been vaccinated.

“I am so excited that the rest of my friends and family are eligible,” said Tina Russell, a Boston resident.

Russell says it’s only as more people get vaccinated that life will at least start to feel normal again.

“I think it will really open up my world again because being the only person vaccinated, I still can’t do anything, like socially,” she said.

Massachusetts is one of the latest states to extend vaccine eligibility to anyone who qualifies.

All residents can pre-register to make an appointment at a mass vaccination site, as well as some regional collaborative sites, at mass.gov/COVIDvaccine.

The state’s online vaccine registration tool went live last month, changing the sign-up process for large-scale site appointments. Pre-registered residents will be added to a waiting list where they will receive weekly status updates and will be notified when an appointment becomes available.

Pre-registration only takes a few minutes on registrationvaccin.mass.gov to get on a waiting list for an appointment at one of the large-scale construction sites.

Once an appointment is open, residents will be notified by email, phone or text, depending on their preference. The notification will include a link with a special code needed to schedule the appointment, which expires after one day.

The appointment must be accepted within 24 hours, otherwise the resident will be returned to the queue and will have to wait for another appointment. Depending on the supply, it may take weeks before people are notified that an appointment is available at a mass vaccination site.

Residents can unsubscribe from pre-registration at any time if they get an appointment elsewhere.

Gov. Charlie Baker has said the hiatus in Johnson & Johnson vaccine administration won’t make much of a difference to vaccine distribution in Massachusetts.

Appointments in other regional and local sites and pharmacies are available on https://vaxfinder.mass.gov/

Residents can also go directly to the websites of Walgreens, CVS and Walmart to find free slots.

During the weekend, Massachusetts passed full vaccination milestone for over 2 million people. Over 3 million first doses have been administered.

Gov. Charlie Baker said he expects “minimal disruption” to vaccine distribution in Massachusetts despite Tuesday’s decision to suspend use of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine while the CDC and the Food and Drug Administration investigate further blood clots in six women that occurred within days of receiving the J&J vaccine.

Baker said Johnson & Johnson’s doses are only a small part of the state’s vaccine supply, so he doesn’t expect the hiatus to have a major impact in Bay State. .

Adult children helping aging parents get COVID-19 shots say process frustrating

WAKE FOREST, NC (WTVD) – Elliot Lochansky of Wake Forest lost his mother to COVID-19 just two weeks ago. She was living in a nursing home and he said he found out “after the fact” that she probably had the coronavirus. “It was more of a nursing home problem,” he said.

Nonetheless, Lochansky set out to register his 78-year-old father to receive the vaccine, as his father lacks the computer skills to navigate the appropriate websites.

“I could give him the phone number and he could make that call over and over again,” Elliot said, instead of using the Internet. “I feel like it might be easier for the elderly to be able to do this.”

Many other adult children are frustrated with having their parents enrolled in vaccines.

“I’m really struggling to get my 67-year-old parents vaccinated against COVID,” said a woman from Durham.

Another woman told ABC11: “It’s so frustrating and disorganized. I don’t see why primary care physicians couldn’t administer the test to their patients.”

She said her aunt was 72 and had diabetes and high blood pressure.

Lochansky said the only thing his father knew how to do was check his bank account and visit the NC Lottery website.

“These are the two things he can do without help,” Lochansky said. “After that, he logs off.

“For a lot of people whose parents are out of state and there is no close family… I can’t imagine how difficult it is to organize them,” Lochansky added.

Watch with the Adult Swim app

To stream Adult Swim through the Adult Swim app, you need to enter your TV provider credentials. Most think you need a Cable Provider ID to use the Adult Swim app, but you don’t. Currently, Hulu Live TV and AT&T TV accounts will work to unlock the Adult Swim app.

You can even download the Adult Swim app on your Roku, Apple TV, or Amazon Fire TV and watch it on your TV using your Hulu Live TV or AT&T TV credentials. The following section contains step-by-step instructions on installing and activating the Adult Swim Go app on your streaming device.

How to watch on your device

For our example, let’s say we have a Hulu Live subscription and a Roku. We can follow the steps below to make the Adult Swim app work on our device. While the steps below use Hulu Live TV and Roku to watch Adult Swim, most streaming services and devices will have the same process.

  1. Go to the Channel Store or App Store on your device. On Roku, this is called the “Channel Store”.
  2. Find an adult swim channel
  3. Add the Adult Swim app to your device and then open it.
  4. Your Roku device will then show you an activation code and a URL.
  5. Using a computer or mobile web browser, you navigate to the URL.
  6. You will then be asked for a TV provider and username / password. Enter the username and password you use for your Hulu Live TV account.
  7. After you log into the Adult Swim website, your TV screen will refresh. You should now have access to all of the video content provided by the app.

Children will not be able to stream on YouTube without adult supervision

YouTube has updated the application of its live streaming policy to prevent young children from going live unless they are supervised by an adult.

In response to widespread criticism that it is not doing enough to curb the spread of inappropriate content and actions related to young children on its platform, Youtube is taking further steps to limit what children can do on its platform.

In addition to limiting the recommendation of videos that show “minors at risk”, YouTube also updated its policies that relate to minors, restricting live functionality for younger minors.

From now on, unless they are “clearly accompanied by an adult,” children will not be able to stream live on YouTube, with the company also explaining last week that “channels that do not comply with this policy may lose their ability to broadcast live. “

In addition, YouTube also has announced the launch of “new classifiers (machine learning tools that help […] identify specific types of content) on […] live products to find and remove more of this content.

the ad comes after a New York Times Report who found that YouTube’s recommendation system “suggested videos of ‘prepubescent and partially clad children’ to users who had watched sexually-themed content. According to YouTube, it has now applied several new restrictions to its recommendation system based on algorithms, reducing recommendations for videos with minors to “tens of millions of videos”.

YouTube says a total ban on videos with children “would hurt creators who rely on the recommendation engine to generate views.”

“Responsibility is our number one priority, and the main focus of our work is the protection of minors and families,” the company explains in the blog post. “With this update, we will be able to better identify videos that may put minors at risk and apply our protections.”

In addition, YouTube explains that videos featuring minors “do not violate […] policies and are displayed innocently. However, there are still a large number of videos that do: the company claims that in the first quarter of 2019 alone, it removed more than “800,000 videos for violations of […] child safety policies (claiming the majority of them were removed before they had ten views).

Going further, YouTube also announced that it was already working with “law enforcement agencies to investigate crimes against children.” As he explains in the blog post, “reports sent to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children have prompted more than 6,000 such investigations in the past two years.”
