Awkward Olympic Figure Skating Moments That Were Filmed

Just ten seconds into her ice dance routine at the PyeongChang 2018 Olympics, French ice skater Gabriella Papadakis felt the clasp snap on the top of her costume. Despite the distraction of this disturbing incident, Papadakis and his partner, Guillaume Cizeron, finished second in the event. The pair went on to take silver and set a world record the next day (per NBC Sports). According to the Guardian, Papadakis’ chest was briefly exposed during the dance, so broadcasters stuck with wider shots to help minimize the situation.

Even if a costume component doesn’t break, it can still cause a lot of anxiety if it doesn’t stay closed. Yura Min, an ice dancer who skated for South Korea at the PyeongChang Games, felt a hook open on the back of her costume early in her ice dance with Alexander Gamelin (per USA Today) . Adrenaline and terror weighed heavily on Min as she tried to keep her outfit by improvising part of the routine. She was successful, although the pair lost points when she had to readjust the costume after showing a shoulder.

Women aren’t the only ones struggling with suits that won’t stay closed. At the 1984 Olympics in Sarajevo, Marina Klimova and Sergei Ponomarenko skated an exhibition dance to celebrate their bronze victory. In the middle of this romantic dance, Ponomarenko’s costume snapped open to show her midriff (per Slate).
